'The Love of Christ Towards Migrants'
Vatican official Archbishop Agostino Marchetto is traveling the nation to discuss Catholics’ role in offering hospitality to all migrant persons.
January 21, 2009 - A high-ranking Catholic Church official whose work is dedicated to human rights will visit UD to promote Catholics’ role in offering hospitality to all migrant persons.
Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, will give a talk on the 2004 Pontifical Council instruction "The Love of Christ Towards Migrants" at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Kennedy Union Boll Theatre. Marchetto is touring the nation to promote U.S. understanding of the instruction, said Mark Ensalaco, director of UD’s human rights studies program.
Marchetto has addressed presidents and senior administrators of U.S. Catholic universities for the past two summers at the Rome seminars of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, articulating the need for Catholic institutions to be places of welcome for people of Islamic, Jewish and other Christian faiths. He also encourages students to seek out opportunities of faith development in other countries. On Feb. 1, he will address the ACCU again at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
Marchetto also will give a public address to Casa Amiga and an audience of immigrants and their advocates at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the Tecumseh YMCA in New Carlisle.
